Shannon Abbott ’12 is offering private lessons for students interested in improving their volleyball skills this summer.

Shannon currently plays volleyball at Hendrix College. She also played seven years of club volleyball and for the Bobcats while at Bosque earning All-State and All-District honors.

Bosque graduate, Cody Unser ’05, was the keynote speaker at the PARTNERS 2013 “Share the Care” Spring Luncheon to benefit the University of Texas School of Nursing at Houston on April 24, 2013.

At age 12, Cody was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a rare condition in which the immune system attacks the spinal cord. She survived the attack but was left paralyzed from the chest down. A year after her diagnosis, when she was barely a teenager, Cody and her mother Shelley Unser, founded the Cody Unser First Step Foundation--a global, not-for-profit organization that raises research funds and promotes public awareness and quality of life for those with all forms of spinal cord related paralysis.

With 420 guests in attendance at the “Share the Care” luncheon, Cody presented a video of a 2011 CBS documentary with Dr. Sanjay Gupta, showing that some paralyzed patients had improved feeling and function after they had been scuba diving. As a quality-of-life advocate, a proponent of therapeutic scuba diving, and a certified scuba diver, Cody founded “Cody Unser’s Great Scuba Adventures,” a program that has proven therapeutic benefits for people with spinal cord injuries. According to an article by Ronda Wendler in the Texas Medical Center News, Cody explained, “Scuba diving is the best feeling in the world. Being free from gravity and free from a wheelchair provides much-needed relief. It allows you to shut off the world above and any doubts about what you are able to accomplish in this world. Plus, fish don’t discriminate.”

Over the years, Cody has testified before state legislatures and Congress to promote stem cell research and has traveled the country fulfilling a series of speaking engagements. In 2009, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Biopolitics--which fuses science and politics--from the University of Redlands in California. Currently, Cody is seeking a master's degree in Public Health at George Washington University, while also looking for new ways to influence politics and policy-making on behalf of medical research, women's health, and disability rights issues.

In the summer of 2012, I traveled to the Mustang region of Nepal with the University of Vermont (UVM) and the Above the Clouds adventure trekking company. The Mustang region is extremely rural, but beautiful, as it is the region in which the Annapurna Mountain Range rests. Mustang also represents one of the most politically volatile areas in Nepal because it shares a border with Tibet, and therefore, remains a region that reveals the truth behind the Nepalese saying that “Nepal is a country resting between two giants”—those “two giants” would, of course, be the quickly developing nations of India and China.

 Finally, the Mustang region faces a cultural crossroads as an area that remains largely isolated from modernity, but still a region in which tourism is quickly increasing, despite the historical Nepali bans and caps for how many people can enter the region per year. Thus, the UVM trekking group studied the delicate balance between modernization and cultural preservation in the region. This included looking at changes in Tibetan Buddhism, the environment, art, technology, social order, etc. I trekked through Nepal for about two months and visited many sacred Hindu and Buddhist sites, and climbed some pretty high mountains. Overall, it was an eye-opening experience and I hope to return someday.

Hope plans to continue her studies and is currently applying to grad school for the fall of 2013.

Bosque Alumnus Mariah Weber '10 runs the Dirty Half Marathon with dad and Bosque soccer coach, Klaus Weber. The father/daughter duo encountered Bosque middle school students serving refreshments along the way. Mariah is currently studying at the University of New Mexico and is an assistant coach with the Bosque girls soccer team.

Dr. John Roth was visiting Martha’s Vineyard earlier in July and ran into alumnus Ben Strozier '11. Ben has enjoyed working at Edgartown Seafood and plans to head back to school in August. Dr. Roth enjoyed this far-from-home encounter.

Cody Unser '05 was honored by the New Mexico Chapter of the American Red Cross at their 4th Annual Real Heroes Breakfast and Awards on Tuesday, May 22 in Albuquerque. There were ten individuals honored statewide for their unselfish and heroic actions that reflect the spirit and ideals of the humanitarian mission of the American Red Cross. Cody was nominated by fellow Bosque alumnus, Alana rolls '05.

Cody Unser '05 founded the First Step Foundation to educate the public about spinal-cord paralysis; she also worked with the Department of Veteran Services to develop a scuba diving program for wounded vets, Operation Deep Down. Cody conducted a 2011 medical study of veterans with spinal cord injuries, which demonstrated the therapeutic, psychological, and physical benefits of scuba diving for disabled participants.

On Wednesday, May 16, Bosque School hosted its 1st All-Alumni Reunion.  It was a wonderful evening of visiting with former classmates and teachers, sharing stories and remembrances of Bosque high school days.  Alumni browsed through old yearbooks, shared pizza, won some fun door prizes, stocked up on the latest Bosque “gear,” and then attended the Class of 2012 Colloquium presentations. 

One happy alum from the class of 2008 said, “It was a blast! It was so much fun re-connecting with friends I had lost touch with and seeing how much Bosque School has grown.” If you missed the reunion, make sure they log onto the Bosque Alumni Facebook.  

Bosque alumna and certified yoga instructor, Darci Lobdell, is offering a yoga class based on the principles of Hatha Yoga for upper school students in the 2012-2013 school year. The goal of the class is for participants to experience the many benefits of yoga including body awareness and health, developing a solid exercise practice, increase in strength and flexibility, and healing and prevention of injuries. The class will be held after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays (3:30-5:00) and can be taken for fun and/or for P.E. credit.

On Friday, April 4th, Katie Carillo '07 was on hand at the opening of her own art exhibit, "Hydrophilia." The exhibit will run until the end of April at the Boro Gallery, 317 Gold Ave. SW., Monday-Friday 5:00 p.m.- 11:00 p.m. Other Bosque alumni attended Katie’s opening.

Rachel Trojahn ‘09 is studying computer engineering with a minor in computer science and math at the University of Arizona.  She currently has an internship with Sandia National Labs which began in Albuquerque last summer and now on a telecommuting basis from school in Arizona.  Rachel noted, “I am taking a lot of cool classes. In one of my classes, I programmed a minesweeper game and in another one of my classes I am programming the popular Pocket Tanks game! Also, last semester, I took a Greek mythology gen ed, which I absolutely loved and reminded me so much of Ms.Sapphire's 6th grade English class (at Bosque)! My internship is especially interesting because I am actually applying everything I learn in class.  My mentor at SNL sort of based what he wanted me to work on around the classes I'm taking.  For example, I started to take Java language classes this year, so he has me coding in Java for work, which makes it all very applicable.  That is actually what inspired me to go into engineering.  I loved math and science; I found it challenging, interesting, and applicable in every-day life (duh, there's science all around you).  Engineering brought both of those loves together and let me really apply my math and science skills into something that could change the world.”

Mike King ‘10 is studying mechanical engineering at the University of New Mexico and currently has an internship with Sandia National Labs working for the DOT (Department of Transportation) Program. He is also a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

Madeleine Carey '10 is competing at a high level in both equestrian eventing and cross country running for Tufts University.

Bringing BEMP to BostonMadeleine Carey ’10 is studying at Tufts University in Boston. Madeleine was an integral part of the Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program (BEMP) and has incorporated her work at Bosque into her environmental sustainability studies in college. Madeleine applied for and received a grant from Tufts University supporting her to intern with the BEMP during the summer of 2011. May 5, 2011

Golden Apple Scholar Nia Sena ’09 joined Bosque School in celebrating David Bair’s Golden Apple Award in March. Nia is studying Early Childhood Education at the University of New Mexico and is a participant in the Golden Apple Scholars Program. This program allows students to work in three unique, hands-on learning settings during the summer months in college. Nia works at the Rio Grande Educational Collaborative where she teaches hands-on science to students at four APS elementary schools. March 2011
