five school teams throughout the state playing in the New Mexico
Lacrosse league with a sixth on the way. The newest team to form is
from Taos and the Bosque School team has donated a set of ten shoulder
pads to help their program get up and running. “Bosque has been
integral to the spread of the sport throughout the state through
clinics, summer camps, and as the host of the annual championship
tournament. I was especially excited to help get the Taos program
underway because they will be including a number of young people from
Taos Pueblo and since lacrosse originated in Native America it seems
fitting to help return the sport to its roots” says Eric Whitbeck,

awareness and show support for cancer survivors and their loved ones. On
Tuesday, May 13, 2008 in Sandia Resort and Casino’s east parking lot from
10:45 A.M. until 2:00 P.M., LiveSTRONG Day 2008 will occur. In honor of
the estimated 560,000 people whose lives are taken by cancer every year,
Michael Sheppard, on the behalf of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, has
organized a 5.6 mile bicycle ride. The ride will be followed by further
advocacy, fundraising, guest speaking, and more. There are going to be an
estimated 100 riders and numerous spectators. All proceeds will go to the
Lance Armstrong Foundation.
“Participating
in LIVESTRONG Day is important to me because cancer truly should be a
national priority and the fight against cancer is a fight that people all
over the world can, indeed, win,” said Michael. “It is an honor to have
the opportunity to support cancer survivors and encourage people in
Albuquerque to unite together to end the needless death and suffering
from the disease that affected nearly 7.6 million worldwide in 2007
alone.”

School Students Take First in Science Competition
Four Bosque School students participated in the 41st Annual Joint AZ-NM
American Fisheries Society and Wildlife Society Chapter meeting in
Prescott, Arizona February 9 & 10. They entered a student poster contest
and won first place competing against graduate students from south west
universities, the two Bosque School student teams tied for first place.
Ivan and Michael’s poster on "How K-12 students monitor their
communities' riparian habitat for natural resource agencies and
professionals" described New Mexico's Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program
(BEMP). Katie and Anna compiled several years worth of field work to
present "North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) live capture
technique and the effectiveness of using the sedative medetomidine
hydrochloride (Domitor) and the antagonist atipamezole hydrochloride (Antiseden)
to facilitate handling."
BEMP is a joint project of the University of New Mexico’s Biology
Department and Albuquerque’s Bosque School operated under the Black
Institute for Environmental Studies at Bosque. This collaborative program
involves over 3,000, K-12 and university student volunteers from over 30
New Mexico public, private, pueblo, and home schools in long-term
ecological research to monitor key indicators of structural and
functional change in the Middle Rio Grande riparian forest, or “bosque.”
The data derived is shared with local, state, tribal, and federal
government agencies in analyzing and managing the bosque. BEMP is the
official K-12 outreach program of UNM’s Sevilleta Long Term Ecological
Research Network, which is a branch of the National Science Foundation’s
Long Term Ecological Research Network, managed by the Biology Department.

Form a Medical Reserve Corps Unit
A
group of five Bosque students are now licensed Basic Emergency Medical
Technicians (EMT) after finishing an160 hour course at CNM. These students subsequently orchestrated
the organization of a Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) unit. The MRC is a
volunteer organization which responds to natural disasters and
emergencies within the United States. With their recent EMT licensure,
these students will assist sporting events on and off campus and respond
to emergency situations within the community and nation wide. The group’s
first assignments were with the NM Special Olympics in May and a skate
park event this summer. Several of the members volunteer their time as
ski patrol at the Sandia Ski Area in the winter months.
The group of licensed EMT’s from Bosque
School includes Asad, Tommy, Quinn, Chris, and Ivan. Several other
students including Dupuy, Gordon, Max, and Sam are participating in
either a First Responder course at Bosque School or an Outdoor Emergency
Care class, a course run through the national ski patrol, which is
equivalent to EMT duties without state licensure.

Support Operation Smile
A group of 25 Bosque School students spent a year organizing and
fundraising to advocate for the non-profit organization, Operation Smile.
“Throughout the world, Operation Smile volunteers to repair childhood
facial deformities while building public and private partnerships that
advocate for sustainable healthcare systems for children and families.
Together, we create smiles, change lives, heal humanity,” according to
the mission quote from the Operation Smile website. Since 1982, Operation
Smile's volunteers have provided free reconstructive surgery to more than
100,000 children and young adults and thousands of healthcare
professionals have been trained globally.
The
officers of the Bosque School chapter of Operation Smile are Kinsey,
Sommer, Kelley, and Mary Sarah. The group is advised by faculty member,
David Bair. In the first year, the group raised over $2,000 to support
seven different children around the world, who will receive corrective
surgery. Durham, Lang, and Merrick attended the Operation Smile
International Student Leadership Conference in Limerick, Ireland over in
August. Additionally, a select few members internationally are selected
to participate each year with a Medical Mission, which is a team of 30
medical professionals who donate their skills and time to help the
children. Kinsey and Bosque School faculty member, David Bair were
selected to participate in a 10-day medical mission in Calcutta, India in
November 2007. November will mark the 25th anniversary of the founding of
the organization and they will celebrate the event by sending 25
different missions in 25 different locations throughout the world.
