Bosque student attends High School Summer Scholars Program

Melissa (’12) attended a five week High School Summer Scholars Program at Washington University in St. Louis.  She was part of a small, select group of rising juniors and seniors experiencing college life and earning college credits.  The goal of the Summer Scholars Program is to develop students’ academic and social skills to give them a head start on their college careers.  Courses offered include humanities, sciences, mathematics, languages, arts and social studies.  Students live in a college residence hall, attend classes and participate in a variety of social and cultural opportunities July 20, 2010

 

New Mexico Scholar/Athlete Award

Bosque Senior Brynn has received the New Mexico Athletic Directors Association (NMADA) Scholar Award for Bosque School.  This award is based on an exhibited excellence in academics and athletics, in addition to Brynn’s essay on “What athletic participation has meant to me”, letters of recommendation and community service involvement.  Brynn will be playing for the Women’s “Prairie Fire” Soccer Team at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.  Congratulations Brynn!  May 19, 2010

 

 

 

John Philip Sousa Band Award

The 2010 John Philip Sousa Band Award has been given to Bosque senior Scott.  Created in 1955, the award honors the top student in a high-school band and recognizes superior musicianship and outstanding dedication, and is the pinnacle of achievement for high school band students.  It was developed with the cooperation of Helen Sousa Albert and Priscilla Sousa, daughters of the famous composer and bandmaster.  This prestigious award is presented to the most outstanding graduating senior band member.  The recipient of the Sousa award is selected by the band director, and must have been loyal, with good character and discipline while achieving the high standards that are required in instrumental music.  May 19, 2010

 

 

Junior One Of 36 Students Chosen For Prestigious Summer Science Program

Bosque student Reed(’11) will spend 6 weeks this summer at the New Mexico Tech Campus, as part of the 52nd Annual Summer Science Program. Reed is one of 36 students chosen from candidates across the United States and the world for this residential enrichment program in which high school students compete a challenging, hands-on research project in celestial mechanics. His class includes students from Greece, India, China and Mexico. By day, students will learn college level astronomy, physics, calculus and programming. By night, working in teams of three, students will take a series of telescopic observations of a near-earth asteroid, and write software to convert those observations into a prediction of the asteroid’s orbit around the sun. Guest speakers and field trips will round out the curriculum. The Summer Science Program strives to accelerate students’ intellectual and personal development, and inspires them to seek equally challenging educational and career paths. May 17, 2010

Make-A-Wish Concert Hosted By Bosque Student

On Saturday, May 8, 2010, Melina(’12), organized a concert to benefit the New Mexico Make-A-Wish Foundation, which is how Melina chose to celebrate her 16th birthday.  The benefit was held at Warehouse 508 in Albuquerque, and Melina arranged for five bands to perform free of charge.  The Make-A-Wish Foundation will be using the over $800 raised to help send a 14 year old girl (who attended the concert with her sister) and her family to Hawaii.  Melina would like to thank everyone from the Bosque School community that contributed!  May 12, 2010

 

6th Grader To Play Honors Recital at Colorado Suzuki Institute

Freya ('16) has been chosen to play her violin at an Honors Rectial at the 2010 Colorado Suzuki Institute in Beaver Creek, Colorado this summer.   Freya sent in a recorded violin audition, and was chosen "as a fine example of Suzuki performance for your age and level".  She will be perfoming the same polished piece from memory at an Honors Recital during the Colorado Suzuki Institute Summer Program.  Each year hundreds of students turn in audition tapes, and only 12 students are chosen to play in honor recitals.  Congratulations Freya!  May 6, 2010

Sussman-Miller Scholarships Given to Two Bosque Seniors

Bosque School seniors Jens and Carter are both receipients of a 2010 Sussman-Miller Educational Assistance Award Program Scholarships.  This program provides financial assitance to address the "gap" in financial aid packages for both students graduating from high school and those continuing their education.  The program received over 100 applicants this year, and 6 recipients were chosen to receive an award.  Jens will be attending Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and Carter will be attending Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.  May 6, 2010

 

Mathematical Olympiads

Fourteen Middle School students from Bosque School were among 150,000 students worldwide to participate in the 2010 Math Olympiad Program.  In a series of five monthly contests of 5 problems each, held November 2009 to March 2010, along with weekly practice sessions and coaching with Math Faculty member Kim Lester, the students were taught to solve unusual and difficult problems and think creatively.  Bosque School placed in the top 20% in overall scores.  Students participating in the program included:

  • Arthur(7th grade), Rebecca(8th grade) and Grant(6th grade) - these three students placed in the top 10% scores.

  • These students placed in the top 50%:  6th graders Aaron, Bryan, Nicole and Jason.  7th graders Chris, Nikki, Nick and Connor, and 8th graders Mica, Carolyn and Caitlin.

 

Gates Millenium Scholars

Bosque seniors Joel and Steven have both been awarded college scholarships through the Gates Millenium Scholars Program.  This prestigious program receives 20,000 applicants each year, and a total of 1,000 scholarships are awarded.  Established in part to provide Native American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education, scholarships are awarded based on cumulative high school GPA, demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service and extracurricular activities.

Bosque Sophomore Receives Summer Music Scholarship at Northwestern University

Thomas (’12), received a scholarship from Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois to study viola as part of the 2010 Summer National High School Music Institute.  An integral part of Northwestern University’s acclaimed Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music, the National High School Music Institute offers an intimate look at collegiate-level music study and music as a career.  The highly selective music division admits approximately 180 musicians, who may choose from eight areas of study.   With a renowned faculty of more than 100, over 24 performance ensembles, and a myriad of classes, the institute offers an ideally challenging summer to the serious high school musician.  May 5, 2010

 

 

Physics Class Sets Sail!

Ben Curry and his Upper School physics class traveled to West Mesa Aquatic Center to test out boats made by the students – entirely out of cardboard and duct tape.  Students had to prove their vessels were able to hold their body weight and then circumnavigate the pool to earn a grade.  A few boats were lost at sea, but most were incredibly sea-worthy – proving that you can learn and have fun in Physics class at the same time!

 

Envirothon 2010

Bosque School Team, consisting of Aaron, JoJo, Ted, Sam, Claire and Catherine, placed 4th in the statewide competition of the New Mexico Envirothon, held April 23-24, 2010 at Hummingbird Music Camp in Jemez Springs, NM.  Envirothon is a hands-on environmental problem solving competition for high school-age students in the United States and Canada.  Participating teams complete training and testing in five natural resource categories: soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and current environmental issues.  Teams of 5 students prepare themselves for this two-day outdoor competition and work to answer natural resource questions and develop solutions to environmental problems.  The overall goal of the New Mexico Envirothon is to develop knowledgeable, skilled and dedicated citizens who are willing to work toward achieving and maintaining a balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment.  May 5, 2010

Model UN Conference in Spanish

Bosque School Spanish Seminar students participated in the 1st Annual Model UN Conference in Spanish.  For four days, students discussed and debated over issues related to corruption and education in Latin America.  Prior to the conference, students spent 2-1/2 intensive weeks researching various sources (in Spanish) in preparation for this important event.  The Model UN forum was a culminating project that allowed students to achieve a deep understanding of Latin American perspectives on issues of global importance, to debate different inter and intra country perspectives, and to formulate possible solutions.  Their Spanish faculty mentor Maria Clara Rekow and the entire Spanish Department at Bosque School congratulate each one of the students for their outstanding performance during the conference.   “Bravo, muchachos!”  April 30, 2010

 

National Chess Championships

Bosque School junior, Gabe, competed in the United States Chess Federation National High School Championships April 15-18 in Columbus, Ohio. Gabe played in the Open division and tied for 47th place out of about 300 competitors in his division. In all divisions combined, about 1200 students participated from around the country. Gabe brought home a trophy for finishing in first place within his rating class of competitors with USCF ratings of 1700-1800 points.

 

In eighth grade at the 2007 USCF National Junior High School Championships in Sacramento, Gabe won the national title in the U-1250 division. In 2008, Gabe and his brother Isaac, Bosque class of '13, teamed up to win the New Mexico Bughouse Chess Championship against competitors of all ages. Bughouse chess is a very rapidly-played game between two teams of two players each. April 20, 2010

 

NM Short Story Contest in Spanish

Two Bosque School students were winners in the 2010 New Mexico Short Story Contest in Spanish (Cuentistas: Concurso literario en espanol del estado de Nuevo Mexico), in the category of non-Spanish speakers.  German exchange student Felicitas won 1st prize with “Hermanas”, and senior Madeleine took 3rd prize.  The contest was sponsored by the Ministerio de Educacion de Espana, the NM Public Education Department, the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the UNM Continuing Education.   Both students will attend an awards ceremony at the National Hispanic Cultural Center on April 21st.    March 30, 2010

 

MATHCOUNTS Students Compete in State

A team Bosque Middle School students took part in the New Mexico MATHCOUNTS Competition on Saturday, March 27th and placed 7th out of 27 teams!  Congratulations go to Grant, Nikki, Jason, Rebecca, Bryan and Annika.

     

 

 

 

 

 

Bosque Students Donate Lacrosse Equipment

The Bosque lacrosse team began three years ago with only two other lacrosse teams in New Mexico. Sandia Prep soon followed and then Bosque helped start a fifth team at Sandia High School by providing coaching instruction and introductory drills to their new team.  There are now five school teams throughout the state playing in the New Mexico Lacrosse league with a sixth on the way. The newest team to form is from Taos and the Bosque School team has donated a set of ten shoulder pads to help their program get up and running. “Bosque has been integral to the spread of the sport throughout the state through clinics, summer camps, and as the host of the annual championship tournament.  I was especially excited to help get the Taos program underway because they will be including a number of young people from Taos Pueblo and since lacrosse originated in Native America it seems fitting to help return the sport to its roots” says Eric Whitbeck, Bosque School Lacrosse Coach.  March 29, 2010

 

Art Award Winner

Bosque School sophomore Lauren, received a first place award for her artwork submitted for the High Plains Prairie Chicken Festival.  Lauren was the winner of the poster contest for Grades 7-12 at the 9th Annual High Plains Prairie Chicken Festival to be held in Milnesand, New Mexico on April 16-18, 2010.   A group of our own Bosque high school BEMP students will be traveling to this festival.   Congratulations Lauren!  March 26, 2010

 

 

 

Chess Masters

Three Bosque students, Gabe(’11), Isaac(’13) and Rebecca(’14) have been competing in Chess Tournaments for many years, and have various achievements to be proud of!  In the December 2009 New Mexico Grade Level Chess Championships, Gabe took 1st place for all 11th graders in the state, and Rebecca took 1st for all 8th graders in the state.  Isaac took 2nd place in the Open Section of the New Mexico K-12 Championships in February 2010, and had the highest score of all freshmen competitors.  Isaac also qualified for the Denker Tournament as one of six contenders that would play off against one another to identify who will represent New Mexico in the National Denker Tournament.   Rebecca is now moving on to compete in the New Mexico State Girls Championships, which she has won the past two years in a row!  March 23, 2010

 

NM Geography Bee Semi-Finalist

Bosque 7th grader, Max, has qualified to represent our school as a Semi-Finalist in the 2010 New Mexico Geography Bee to be held on Friday, April 9, 2010.  One hundred top-scoring students will participate in the Geography Bee.  Way to go Max!

 

 

 

 

 

Bosque School Freshman Chosen For 2010 U-15 National Team

Bosque School freshman Ben has been chosen to join the 2010 U.S. Soccer U-15 National Team.  As a Bosque Bobcat, he earned a second team all state soccer selection for the 2009 season.

NM Junior Classical League Convention

On Saturday, February 13th, students from around the state of New Mexico attended the first annual New Mexico Junior Classical League convention co-sponsored by Bosque School and Albuquerque Academy. Students participated in several events and competitions involving the Latin language, Roman culture and mythology. All our Bosque students did an outstanding job! Special congratulations go to Bosque Freshman Claire, who won the prize for the best overall performance of a 9th grade student at the convention. February 17, 2010
 

 


MATHCOUNTS Competition 2010

The Bosque School MATHCOUNTS Team placed 3rd out of 17 teams that competed over the weekend of February 12-14, 2010, and will now move on to compete in the New Mexico State Competition on March 27th. The MATHCOUNTS Competition 2010 consisted of 6th, 7th and 8th grade Bosque students that were selected through a series of math challenges held throughout the semester. This year’s participants were Aaron, Jason, Grant, Rebecca, Nikki, Nicole, Annika and Bryan. The MATHCOUNTS Competition is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging “bee” style contests. The program exists in all 50 states plus 5 U.S. territories and the Department of Defense and State Department schools, and is supported by the National Society of Professional Engineers at the state and local levels. Bosque School Freshman Lucy and her horse Cosmo were the Champions of Children Hunters (age 14-17) and Equitation (age 15-17), as part of the Hunter/Jumper Competition at Tucson HITS (Horse Shows in the Sun) in Tucson, Arizona, February 4-7, 2010. Students travel to Chicago for Model UN

Eight Bosque students traveled to Chicago February 4-7, 2010 to attend the Model United Nations of the University of Chicago. Zainab, Amy, Holly, Annie, Amber, Gabe, Jessie and Claire joined high school and college students from around the world to receive a unique education in politics, diplomacy, and foreign affairs. The Model United Nations experience brings to life the problems that face the real world and allows participants to represent their assigned country’s position and work toward resolving issues of global importance. Students Educators Chosen for Operation Smile

Four Bosque students have been selected to work as volunteer student educators on Operation Smile medical missions in 2009-2010. Operation Smile’s network of volunteers works worldwide to repair childhood facial deformities including cleft lips and cleft palates. Maja(’10) will be traveling to Santa Cruz, Bolivia in March 2010; Krystal(’11) will be traveling to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in May 2010; Ben(’11) will be traveling to Amman, Jordan in June 2010; and Danielle(’10) traveled to Pakse, Laos in November 2009. Operation Smile depends on students around the world, contributing their youthful energy and imagination to making a child smile. The role of these students on missions is to teach primary health care to patients and families at the mission site, local hospitals, schools and orphanages; in addition to comforting children before and after surgery. Bosque Students Win Wildlife Research Awards

Six Bosque students attended the 2010 Joint Annual Meeting of the Arizona and New Mexico Chapters of The Wildlife Society and the Arizona/New Mexico Chapter of the American Fisheries Society held in Flagstaff, Arizona, February 4-6, 2010. Krystal, Sarah, Maddie, Dara, Sam and Sean presented technical posters concerning their wildlife and fisheries research projects in New Mexico. As the only high school students in attendance, all of their work was recognized as professional and on par with the presentations done by both undergraduate and graduate students! February 8, 2010

Bobcats Swim To A Big Win!
Both boys and girls swim teams won the Capital City Invite over the weekend of February 6-7, 2010 in Santa Fe, NM. The Bobcats prevailed over 7 other school teams, and won another first for Bosque School, as we have had boys win a meet or girls win a meet but never both together to win the entire meet! Bosque Medical Reserve Corps students reach out to Haiti Victims

Members of the Bosque School Medical Reserve Corp have applied, through Operation Smile, to travel to Haiti and help will the Haiti Disaster Relief effort. The Medical Reserve Corp is dedicated to establishing teams of local volunteer medical and public health professional to contribute their skills and expertise throughout the year as well as during times of community need. Thank you Bosque students for your desire to help others and build a better world together! February 3, 2010

 

Help for Haiti

Two days following the crisis in Haiti, 8th grade Bosque students Olivea, Ashlyn, Savannah, Hunter, Sydney, and Sandia Prep student Sam put their heads and hearts into action. They planned, shopped, located a venue, baked and finally held a bake sale the Saturday following the earthquake and raised $188.00. Solamor Hospice matched the sum resulting in $364.00 donated to the Red Cross for the Haiti relief fund. January 30, 2010
 

 

 


Spanish Honor Society

The 37 smiling faces of the Bosque School 2009-2010 Spanish Honor Society! The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH) is an honor society for high school students enrolled in Spanish and Portuguese and is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. The purpose of the society is to recognize high achievement of high school students in the Spanish and Portuguese languages and to promote a continuing interest in Hispanic and Portuguese studies. All Harrier Bobcats

Bosque seniors Amanda (’10) and Madeleine (’10), were named to the New Mexico All Harrier A-AA girls cross country team by the New Mexico Track and Cross Country Coaches Association. Mexican Exchange Students visiting Bosque School

Bosque School is hosting ten Mexican exchange students and teachers from Colegio Reina Elizabeth in Mexico City. The students will spend two weeks here, attending classes and going on special field trips with their Bosque buddy and host families. Bosque School’s Cantate going to Carnegie Hall

The Bosque School’s Cantate Choral Ensemble, Ms. Joanna Carlson Hart – Director, has been invited to perform under the baton of Jason Paulk in world famous Carnegie Hall in March 2011. Acclaimed conductor, clinician and adjudicator Dr. Jason Paulk – Director of Choral Activities at Eastern New Mexico University, will conduct Haydn’s Paukenmesse (Mass in Time of War). Dr. Paulk has specifically invited the Bosque School’s Cantate to join him for this performance. January 21, 2010
 

Bosque students receive Three Cups of Tea

When Greg Mortenson, author of the recently released Stones Into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan, visited Bosque School in December 2009, he was so impressed by Bosque students that he pledged a book to each of them! Each Upper School student received a copy of The New York Times #1 Bestseller Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace, One School At A Time. Each Middle School student received a copy of The Young Readers edition Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Journey to Change the World...One Child at a Time.

Middle School spelling champs, 7th grader Jaclyn (#11) and 8th grader Eve (#39), represented Bosque School at the Albuquerque Private/Parochial Spelling Bee round of the 2010 Albuquerque Newspapers in Education Scripps National Spelling Bee, held January 12th at Legacy Academy. Middle School supports group in Uganda

Through fundraising efforts, the Bosque Middle School government raised $300, researched different enterprises they could support, and chose a group associated with KIVA – whose mission it is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty through short term loans. Grace Ssaku was the recipient of the $300 loan. She owns a clothing sales business in Mukono, Uganda and has been selling clothes for nine years. She will use the loan to buy more clothes for her shop expansion. KIVA is the world’s first person to person micro lending website, empowering individuals to lend to unique entrepreneurs around the globe. January 13, 2009

Bosque Students Attend 2009 Diversity Leadership Conference

Eight Bosque students – Melina, Nikki, Gloria, Andi, Angie, Annie, Joel and Cameron, attended the 2009 Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC), December 3-5, 2009, in Denver Colorado.   The SDLC is a multiracial, multicultural gathering of upper school student leaders (grades 9-12) from across the country that focuses on self-reflecting, forming allies, and building community.  Led by a diverse team of adult and peer facilitators, participants develop effective cross-cultural communication skills, better understand the nature and development of effective strategies for social justice, practice expression through the arts, and learn networking principles and strategies. Student Groups Collect Gifts

Bosque School Upper School students collected gifts through the “Giving Snowman” that will be distributed to children staying with their families at the local Ronald McDonald house during the holiday season.  Middle School students collected gifts through a “Giving Basket” that will be taken to a local APS Elementary School that has children in need.  Bosque School Key Club baked homemade cookies that are also being taken to Ronald McDonald house for families to enjoy!  December 18, 2009

 

Bosque School Receives College Readiness Recognition

Bosque School has received the “2009 College Readiness Award” from the New Mexico ACT Council for increasing the number of students taking the ACT Assessment over the past five years and significantly increasing their level of achievement and college readiness.  This resulted in greater numbers of Bosque students being college ready as a result of the efforts of Bosque students and staff.  Only 11 high schools in New Mexico have accomplished this feat!

Key Club and K Kids Team Up To Collect Food

Bosque School Key Club and Corrales Elementary School K-Kids teamed up and collected enough canned food to feed over 25 local families during the Holiday Season!  Key Club is a student driven high school service organization, and K-Kids is an elementary school student service organization.  Both of these groups serve under the local Corrales Kiwanis Club.  December 18, 2009

 

US Journalism Class publishes Lugares

Lugares, Spanish for places, is a magazine compiled by the upper school journalism class.  Having solicited for writing about places from both upper and middle school students, 99 pieces of student writing were received.  Among the work are several letters written as part of the Aldo Leopold Centennial writing contest.  Bosque senior Sierra’s letter was selected by the Aldo Leopold judges, from among hundreds sent from around New Mexico, as the contest winner.  Students whose writing was selected for the magazine were asked to submit images to accompany their writing.  The resulting work comprises Lugares.  The Journalism Staff includes Emily, Shannon, Emily and Elijah.  The Faculty Advisors are Steve Modzewleski and Kevin Cummins.  Copies of Lugares are available in the Middle and Upper School lobbies.  December 18, 2009

Bosque 7th Graders learn JAVA

Three Bosque 7th graders, Nick, Koyla and Adrian, are going to UNM every Monday to take a Java class at the Computer Science department. Drew Levin, a PhD student at UNM, is teaching the class. The kids are very excited about learning this language and hope to participate in the State Science Fair or work on a project for the Supercomputing Challenge. All State Band Students

Congratulations to the Bosque School students that were selected for 2009 New Mexico All State Band Awards:

Justin – All State Symphonic Orchestra and Band.  Justin will be performing with the All State Symphonic Band in Popejoy Hall on the campus of UNM on Saturday, January 9, 2010.

Noah – All State Jazz Band III (Saxophone). 

Blane – All State Jazz Band 1 (Piano).  Blane is ranked #1 in the state of New Mexico, as only one piano player per band is allowed!

Both Noah and Blane will perform as members of the three elite jazz bands at UNM on Sunday, January 24, 2010.  December 9, 2009

Bosque Senior Wins Aldo Leopold Writing Contest
As part of the Aldo Leopold Centennial Celebration, Sierra, a Bosque School senior, was awarded first place in the high school category of the writing competition. Students were asked to write letters to Mr. Leopold telling him how or why his writings are important today. The contest required students to be creative and thoughtful, while revealing their understanding of Leopold’s land ethic. Sierra was also featured on KUNM Youth Radio Show in November.

Girls Cross Country State Champs

The 2009 Bosque School girls cross country team won the A-AA New Mexico State Championship. This is the first state championship for a Bosque School cross country team. Paced by captain, Madeleine ('10) the Bosque bobcats placed three finishers on the top ten individual medal podium: Madeleine 3rd, Jackie ('14) 6th, and Kendall ('14) 9th. Reiley ('14) Amanda ('10), Jasmine ('11), and Haley ('13) rounded out the rest of the varsity squad.  Bosque won with a decisive victory with 52 points.  November 11, 2009

 

 

Bosque School Boys Soccer Repeats State Title

Bosque School became back-to-back 1A-3A boys soccer state champions Saturday after beating Sandia Prep 3-1 at the APS Soccer Complex.  In the 2008 State Championship, Bosque also went up against Sandia Prep and won state.  Coach Klaus Weber dedicates the Bobcat’s win to the hard work and dedication of the team members.  Congratulations Bobcats!  November 8, 2009

Spanish students Experience Flamenco

Sixteen Spanish students went to see a magnificent flamenco show at the National Hispanic Cultural Center as the conclusion to a unit about Federico García Lorca (1898-1936), Spanish poet killed by the Franco's Fascist Troops.  October 15, 2009

 

 

 

National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist

Angie (’10) was named as a semifinalist in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. She has an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 National Merit Scholarships that will be offered in Spring 2010. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. October 7, 2009

 

 

 

 

 

Sarah (’11) was selected from an elite group of female ballet students, and awarded a scholarship to participate in Boston Ballet’s 2009 Summer Dance Program in Boston, Massachusetts, June 27-August 1, 2009.   Over 2,000 students auditioned for 300 spots in the 2009 Summer Dance Program, which included dancers from 44 states and 16 countries.  Sarah was recently selected to dance the part of Clara (for the 2nd year in a row) in the New Mexico Ballet Company’s November 2009 production of The Nutcracker , and will dance in Alice in Wonderland in Spring 2010.  September 18, 2009

 

 

 

Sarintha (’12), spent three very hot weeks (110 degrees plus!) in India and Nepal, as part of the Sustainable Global Youth Leadership Alliance (SGLA) Program.  She was selected after an application process, along with a group of eighteen other young people from New Mexico that visited shrines, orphanages and a sustainable village in Nepal.  SGLA develops young leaders with the vision to address critical environmental, economic and social challenges of our world.    September 9, 2009

 

 

Presenting the Class of 2009

On May 21, 2009, the 64 members of the Bosque School class of 2009 walked across the stage and received their high school diplomas from Head of School Andrew Wooden.  The commencement speaker was Amy Costello, former producer at National Public Radio in Washington, DC, and foreign correspondent covering Africa.  As our seniors head off to college, we wish congratulations and good luck to all our Bobcats!

Bosque student artwork donated to Animal Shelter

Bosque students created and donated paintings to the “ART for the ANIMALS” fundraising event taking place on August 1, 2009, designed to benefit the Animal Humane Society of New Mexico.  Lauren, Cam, Ariel, Dianna, Gloria and Bosque Art Faculty member Steve Modzelewski all donated their pieces for the benefit of this organization.  \

People to People Leadership Program

Sara and Stacy, both class of 2015, attended the People to People World Leadership Forum during their 6th grade year. This program was held in Washington D.C. and allowed the girls to study leadership and explore some of the United States’ most prominent monuments and institutions. Participants engaged in small-group discussions and exercises to experience first-hand how successful leaders develop strategies, make decisions, build consensus, and foster change.  Students are selected for this program based on outstanding scholastic merit, civic involvement, and leadership potential.  June 1, 2009

 

Shakespearean Journey

Shavanna, Jonathon and Luca act out a scene from Taming of the Shrew, one of many Shakespeare’s works performed as part of the annual Bosque School Shakespearean Journey.  In this scene, Bianca is being wooed by Lucentio and Hortensio.  So that they can get close to her without her father knowing, they disguise themselves as tutors.  The entire 8th grade participates in Shakespeare scenes set on the Bosque School campus, under the direction of Performing Arts faculty members Marina Sage and Colleen McClure. NM Girls Chess Champion

Rebecca, a Bosque School 7th grader, won the New Mexico Girls Chess Championship on April 4, 2009, held at the Academy for Technology and the Classics in Santa Fe, NM.  For the second year in a row, Rebecca will represent New Mexico at the Polgar National Invitational for Girls, to be held at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX the weekend of July 26-31, 2009.  More details on the Polgar can be found at:

First Place Trophy for Bosque Upper School Band

The Bosque Upper School Band traveled to Colorado Springs on Friday, April 24th to compete in the Cavalcade of Music Band Competition at the Pikes Peak Convention Center.  Our band competed in the AA Jazz Band Category and received a Superior Rating from all three judges who awarded the Bosque Band the first place trophy.  Congratulations to Band Director Stuart Fessinger and all the musicians!

 

International Thespian Society Induction

The International Thespian Society is a world wide organization that was created in 1929.  The guiding principle is dedication to excellence in educational theatre, and its purpose is to honor students who excel in theatre.  At Bosque School, theatre is brought to the community, as students perform at Morning Meetings, Lunch Time and Activity Blocks.  Students earn points based on their theatre work, and when they accumulate 600 hours of theatre work, they wear a Thespian Honor Cord when they graduate.  April 30, 2009

 

2009 Envirothon Champs!

The Vectors – Tristan, David, Kelly, Aaron and Sam – took first place in Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatics and oral presentations at the 2nd Annual New Mexico Envirothon competition, April 24-25, 2009 in Bonita Park Camp, Ruidoso.   Envirothon is a hands-on environmental problem solving competition for high school age students in the United States and Canada.  Participating teams complete training and testing in five natural resource categories: soil and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and current environmental issues.  Tristan took first place, David took second and Kelly took fifth overall.  Team Vector won the overall competition, and will go on to the National Envirothon in Asheville, NC in August.  April 28, 2009

 

Spanish Honor Society Induction

The Spanish Honor Society was founded by the “American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese” in 1953, for the students of North American secondary schools.  The name of the Bosque School Chapter, established in 1999, is Octavio Paz, in honor of the Mexican Poet and Nobel Prize Laureate who died in 1998.  This is the 10th year celebration of the Bosque School Chapter, and as a result of these new members being inducted, there are now 60 active members!  

 

2009 National Latin Exam Results

In early March 2009, 86 Bosque Upper School students participated in the National Latin Exam along with over 135,000 students from all 50 states and 11 foreign countries.  This is the second year that Bosque students have participated in this exam, and like last year, Bosque students did exceptionally well.  Nearly half of those students who took the exam received recognition for their work, and 18 students received the highest honors – summa cum laude (gold medal) and maxima cum laude (silver medal) for their work on the exam!  April 24, 2009

 

Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) Arts Festival 2009

Bosque School students traveled to Kincaid School in Houston, Texas for the 2009 ISAS Arts Festival.  The ISAS Arts Festival is officially sanctioned and supported by the Association to help promote and develop Upper School (grades 9 through 12) arts activities and curricula of its member schools.  Participation in the Festival in intended to foster high standards and stimulate creativity in the performing and fine arts programs of the schools and in the individual endeavors of students and teachers.    April 23, 2009

 

Junior Civitan Governor is Bosque Junior

Bosque junior Amber was recently elected Governor of the Junior Civitan Club of the Greater Southwest District, which includes Texas, New Mexico and Colorado.  Junior Civitan is a non-profit service group made up of everyday citizens who come together in communities throughout the world to make life better for their neighbors.  Amber was also Bosque School President for 2 years, Greater Southwest District Junior Civitan Deputy Governor for 2 years, and she is currently running for Civitan International Director.

 

2009 Tri M Honor Society Reception

Ten new members were inducted into Bosque School’s Tri M Honor Society, and eight graduating seniors were honored in a ceremony in Budagher Hall.  Tri M Honor Society is the international honor society recognizing secondary music students for their musical ability, academic excellence, school involvement, and community service.  Mrs. Joanna Hart is the Bosque faculty representative for this talented group!      April 22, 2009

Planet Connect Grant awarded to Bosque student
Sean, a Bosque junior was awarded a grant to complete an environmental project as part of a launch of a new social networking site, Planet Connect, in partnership with The National Environmental Education Foundation and The Weather Channel.  With the help of his Wildlife Biology and Conservation classmates, Sean will build a kiosk at a trailhead to provide information to visitors about ongoing research and monitoring in the bosque, and attract more people to the trail.  Sean believes that his project will inspire other community groups and classes to be involved with outdoor learning in the bosque, and hopes that more kiosks like his will be built in the future for other trails.     April 16, 2009

Two Bosque Seniors Named as Golden Apple Pathway Scholars

Taylor (’09) and Nia (’09), were named as Pathway Scholars by the Golden Apple Foundation of New Mexico.  They will both participate in a six week summer institute that includes learning experience and hands-on teaching experience with elementary-age children in Albuquerque community centers.  The Golden Apple Pathway Scholars Program is a comprehensive program to enhance teacher recruitment, preparation and induction in New Mexico.  Participants for the program were recruited from all high schools within New Mexico, and 50 students statewide were selected for this years’ program.  Both Taylor and Nia plan to pursue their teaching degrees in college.  April 10, 2009

 

Bosque ‘cats CAN swim! The Bosque Swim Team has finished up another fantastic season. Mike and Seth, both Bosque seniors, have been swimming for Bosque since they were in the 8th grade. Says Bosque Swim Coach Sheri Mahoney, “It was hard for me to watch them swim their last race. They have both been huge assets to our swim team and will be missed”.

Members of the Middle School Reading Club, Madeline, Isabel and Modesto, joined Bosque Librarian Mary Tuttle, at the Christina Kent Early Childhood Center, to read to the 4 and 5 year old group, and donated over 230 books they had collected in a school book drive, nearly doubling the size of Christina Kent’s library!   The Christina Kent Center provides low-cost childcare, education, and nutritional services to the children of low-income working families in a safe and nurturing environment

Bosque Boy’s Varsity Basketball team wins 2A District Championship at home, by defeating Estancia 72-31.  This is Bosque School’s 1st Boys Varsity District Championship!  Coach Craig Snow and the team were recently recognized in the Albuquerque Journal as “A Rising Power”.  GO BOBCATS!

Mexican Exchange Students Visit

Four of the twenty-two Mexican exchange students and teachers from Colegio Reina Elizabeth in Mexico City are welcomed to Bosque School at their first morning meeting.  The students will spend two weeks at Bosque School, attending classes and going on special field trips with their Bosque buddy and host families.

 

 

 

Reiley, a Bosque School 7th grader participated in “Pay it Forward Day” in a big way!

“For my school project I was asked to come up with a way to "Pay it Forward" by doing random acts of kindness for others. I enjoy knitting and crocheting so I decided to reach out to fellow knitters and crocheters to help give the gift of warm blankets to children who need them the most. Spaghetti & Serenades

Bosque School’s Cantate, sang and performed for a crowd in Budagher Hall, at the “Spaghetti and Serenades” dinner on Wednesday, February 11th. The evening concert was held as a benefit to raise money for the Cantate group to travel to Houston, Texas, April 2-4, 2009 and attend the Independent School Association of the Southwest Arts Festival.

Bosque Seniors Awarded the All Harrier

Bosque seniors, Niquel and Sam were awarded the All Harrier, given to the top 10 senior finishers in Cross Country State finals.  Both Niquel and Sam have run cross country all four years for Bosque.  Sam was 13th this year at the state championship, and Niquel was 8th.

 

 

 

Bosque Senior awarded Player of the Week

Bosque senior, Ryan, 6’9” post for the Bobcat Varsity Basketball team, scored 77 points in three victories last week, earning the latest Journal/State Farm Prep Performer of the Week award.  

 

 

 

 

Bosque Junior named National President

Holly, a Bosque junior, has been elected the 2009-2010 national president of the Pinto Horse Association of America Youth Organization, which has its headquarters in Bethany, Oklahoma.  Holly has been showing pinto horses for 6 years.

Two Bosque Students Nominated for the 2009 Amy Biehl Spirit Award

Bosque seniors Rachel and Katherine were both nominated for the Amy Biehl Spirit Award, which honors youth for their commitment to making the world a better place.  Twenty eight New Mexico youth between the ages of 13-26 were nominated for their commitment to community service and philanthropy in New Mexico. Operation Smile Student Educators Selected

Three Bosque students were selected as volunteer student educators for Operation Smile 2009 medical missions.  Gina (’09) will be traveling to Cairo, Egypt; Rachael (’10) will be traveling to Zhengzhou, China; and Lauren (’10) will be traveling to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  Operation Smile’s network of doctors and volunteers works worldwide to repair childhood facial deformities including cleft lips and cleft palates.

 

 

Bosque School Swim Team Members Qualify For State Swim Meet
Bosque boys have qualified for the 200 medley relay, 400 free relay and 200 free relay. Seth has qualified for 4 individual events:  100 free, 100 breast, 200 1M and 200 Free.  Jasmine has qualified for the individual100 back and 200 1M.
 

Three Bosque students are spending their 2008 spring semester studying abroad

Bosque junior Angie will be in the village of Mettray, France, a small village outside of Tours in the Loire Valley.  She will be studying at a French High School as part of the AFS student exchange program, and living with a French family.  She spent 18 months working with a tutor to learn to speak French fluently!

 

Bosque senior Jessie is completing her senior year as a foreign exchange student in Argentina, with the AFS student exchange program.  She participated in the Amigos de la Americas program the previous two summers, first in the Dominican Republic and then Paraguay.  Jessie plans to major in Latin American studies and Public Health in college.

 

Bosque junior Robin will be attending The Traveling School, and studying in Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and El Salvador.As she experiences life in another culture, she will earn academic credit towards graduation, and complete service and volunteer projects.  The Traveling School’s main goal is for students to earn full high school academic credit for unique and unrivaled courses in math, history, science, language arts, foreign language, PE and global studies.

 

Two other Bosque students are spending the entire 2008-2009 school year studying abroad.  Brystal is in the Netherlands and Diego is in Honduras.

 

Nine Bosque Students Make All-state As Musicians, Two Selected As Alternates

Over 4000 student musicians from all over New Mexico auditioned, yet only about one in eight was selected to perform in one of two all state choirs, two all state orchestras, or three all state bands. Bosque’s eleven honored musicians include six from chorus, three from orchestra, and two from band.

Bosque Students Attend Diversity Leadership Conference

Bosque juniors, Nicole, Angie and Joel attended the Diversity Leadership Conference in New Orleans on December 5-7, 2008.  The theme of this year’s conference was “Preserving Self, Building Community and Sustaining Change: The Essence of Student Leadership”.  The Student Diversity Leadership Conference is a multiracial, multicultural gathering of upper school student leaders (grades 9-12) from around the country that focuses on self-reflecting, forming allies and building community.

 

Bosque junior, Madeleine, recently won the Merrill Lynch Training 3-Day Event Horse Trials, with her horse, Andiamo.  Madeleine competes not only in horse events, but also runs on the cross country and track teams.
 

 

 


Volley for the Cure”, a volleyball tournament held in October 2008, raised $664 for breast cancer awareness causes!

Bosque Students Represent BEMP

The following high school and middle school students joined the Bosque BEMP staff, Melanie Keithley and Jen Schuetz, and UNM Bosque interns to represent BEMP, and talk about the importance of our water based bosque, at the annual Albuquerque Water Festival, on October 27 and 28. The Water Festival is open to 400 4th graders from around the city, and give kids a real hands on approach to water learning.  Students presenting were:  Mary Lee,

Advanced Placement Scholar Award
Bosque graduate Andrew (’08) has earned an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar Award in recognition of his exceptional achievement on AP Exams.  Andrew is currently a Regents Scholar at the University of California at Santa Barbara, majoring in Business Economics.  He is a member of the Men’s Chamber Choir and serves as the portfolio analyst for the Associated Students Investment Advisory Committee at UCSB.

Border Wide Environmental Education Conference

A group representing Bosque School and BEMP – the Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program, participated in a three day long conference focused on environmental education in Juarez, Mexico this summer. Bosque School science teachers Dan Shaw and Catherine Bailey presented the workshop with the help of Anna Perez-Umphrey, Bosque High School Senior and 2006 alumna Kathryn Shaw. The Border Wide Environmental Education Conference was a gathering of people from the environmental education community from across the US-Mexico border. The workshop presented by Bosque School focused on the work and methods of BEMP, which for the past 12 years has involved K-12 students in collecting data from the bosque that has been analyzed and published by the University of Mexico for use by government agencies to manage the Rio Grande’s riverside forest.
 

Bosque Student Earns EMT

Ivan has just earned his Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate (EMT-1) License and Nurse Tech III from the state of New Mexico. He is leader of the volunteer student Medical Reserve Corps at Bosque School, is an on-site EMT for the school, a volunteer member of the Sandia Peak Ski Area Patrol, and a volunteer with the Los Ranchos Fire Department and Bosque Farms Fire and Rescue.
 

Bosque Student Wins 1st Place in Annual 505 Youth Film Festival

Dan recently won first prize in the first annual 505 Youth Film Festival for his short film “Calaveras”. The film was screened at the historic Kimo Theater in downtown Albuquerque. Dan has just completed his next project, another short film titled “Palido”.

 

 

 

Bosque Tennis Player Signs with Davidson College

Molly ’08 has signed a national letter of intent to play Division I collegiate tennis for Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. Molly played a major role in capturing Bosque School’s third consecutive 1A-3A NMAA Team State Championship in 2008. She capped her third individual state championship title this May. Outside of Bosque tennis, Molly played on the Billie Jean King Rural Team and won the Jr. Team Championship on that team as well. She was selected as the Jr. Player of the Year for the United States Tennis Association’s southwest section in 2007.

Bosque Students Achieve Latin Honors

Several Bosque School students took the 2008 National Latin exam this spring for the first time. There were 134,000 students internationally who participated in this year’s exam. The following Bosque students achieved recognition and high marks on their exam:

Envirothon Champions

A five-member team from Bosque School captured top honors at the Canon Envirothon state competition in April.  The Bosque team members include David, Brynne, Sarah, Tristan and Kelly.  These students will represent New Mexico in Flagstaff for the national competition in July 2008.  The Canon Envirothon is an annual competition in which winning state/provincial teams compete for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management. The teams, each consisting of five high school-aged students from participating US States and Canadian Provinces, exercise their training and problem-solving skills in a competition centered on four universal testing categories (i.e., soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, and wildlife) and a current environmental issue.


Cantate Performs in Georgia

The Bosque School Cantate, directed by Joanna Hart, traveled to Savannah, GA in April to complete the school exchange that started in October when a choir from Savannah Country Day School traveled to NM. The choir performed for the County Fair days at SCDS, at the plaza in downtown Savannah, and at the First Presbyterian Church, an historic church in the heart of Savannah.

 

 


Key Club Chartered at Bosque School

Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Corrales, the first Key Club at Bosque School will have its Chartering Ceremony Sunday, April 27th, at the school’s Ford Library. Twenty-two Bosque students will be inducted into Key Club, a high school service club under the parent group, Kiwanis International. The largest high school service club in the world, Key Club was started in 1925 in Sacramento, California, and currently exists on nearly 5000 high school campuses. It is a student-led organization whose primary objectives are to develop leadership and initiative through working together to serve the community. Part of Bosque School’s core curriculum is community service.
 

Bosque School’s first Key Club officers are Mary, president; Kathryn, vice-president; Mariah, secretary; Holly, treasurer; Megan and Medora, co-editors. The faculty advisor is Ms. Mari Bauman, Bosque School’s Service Program Director and also a Key Club parent. The Kiwanis Club of Corrales will partner in service with the Key Club and provide general guidance and support. Kiwanis District 2 Lieutenant Governor, Anne Wiker, will assist with the charter presentation.


Students Attend Environmental Conference

Three Bosque School students participated in the 1st ever US Fish and Wildlife Youth Forum held at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in April!  This was a regional youth forum with 40 students representing: New Mexico, Arizona, Texas & Oklahoma.  

 

The Bosque team presented "BEMP as a community monitoring program". The team included Anthony, Addie, and Claire along with a UNM student intern, Stephen. The theme of this year’s conference was "young people can do green things" and it was an opportunity for students to network with other students that have also been working on green-themed programs at their school or in their community.  Other presentations included: introducing a recycling program to a school and community in Oklahoma; working with red-eared slider turtles; restoring riparian habitat for salamanders; squirrel population studies in northern New Mexico; and creating an outdoor classroom, wetlands, amphitheater & butterfly garden at a school in Oklahoma.  Students also had the opportunity to work with UNM professors doing a variety of desert ecology studies, including: jackrabbit survey, small mammal trapping, arthropod collecting and a Smokey the Bear boot camp!


Junior Civitan Students Awarded

The Southwest Junior Civitan organization presented Bosque School with five awards at the recent southwest Junior Civitan meeting in April:

• Amber- Southwest President of the Year
• Alex- Southwest Secretary of the Year
• Nia and Austin - Individual awards for the region
• Bosque School- Community Project of the Year for their work with Carrie Tingley Hospital

The district board of directors also elected 4 of the 5 board positions to Bosque Students for the upcoming year.


Eighteen Bosque Upper School Students Earn Spanish Honor Society Awards

Eighteen upper school students were officially inducted into the Spanish Honor Society on April 3, 2008. The students earning this recognition include:  Joel, Alex, Madeleine, Amanda, Taylor, Angie, Katrin, Dara, Sheila, Lindsey, Ali, Amber, Galen Carter, Emily, Samantha, Holly, and Maja. Congratulations to all!


Bosque School 6th Grader Wins the New Mexico Polgar Chess Championship

Bosque School sixth grader, Rebecca, won the New Mexico Girls’ Chess Championship in March. This is the Polgar Championship award and allows Rebecca to compete in the National Championship in August.


Bosque Student Organizes LiveSTRONG Day Ride 2008

On May 13, 2008, Bosque School student and cancer advocate, Michael, will join the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) to unite people affected by cancer and raise awareness about cancer issues.
 

The event organized by Michael is one of 500 local LiveSTRONG Day events to be held across the country to engage communities with experiences that increase awareness and show support for cancer survivors and their loved ones. On Tuesday, May 13, 2008 in Sandia Resort and Casino’s east parking lot from 10:45 A.M. until 2:00 P.M., LiveSTRONG Day 2008 will occur. In honor of the estimated 560,000 people whose lives are taken by cancer every year, Michael Sheppard, on the behalf of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, has organized a 5.6 mile bicycle ride. The ride will be followed by further advocacy, fundraising, guest speaking, and more. There are going to be an estimated 100 riders and numerous spectators. All proceeds will go to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
 

“Participating in LIVESTRONG Day is important to me because cancer truly should be a national priority and the fight against cancer is a fight that people all over the world can, indeed, win,” said Michael. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to support cancer survivors and encourage people in Albuquerque to unite together to end the needless death and suffering from the disease that affected nearly 7.6 million worldwide in 2007 alone.”


Bosque School Students Shoot Hoops For Hearts
The Bosque School sixth grade physical education classes spent the month of February raising money and shooting hoops for the American Heart Association in conjunction with American Heart Month. The class of 2014 raised $4,384, which will directly support national cardiovascular research through the American Heart Association. Bosque School earned top honors is this year’s school contest raising more money than any other participating school.


Bosque School Students Take First in Science Competition

Four Bosque School students participated in the 41st Annual Joint AZ-NM American Fisheries Society and Wildlife Society Chapter meeting in Prescott, Arizona February 9 & 10. They entered a student poster contest and won first place competing against graduate students from south west universities, the two Bosque School student teams tied for first place. Ivan and Michael’s poster on "How K-12 students monitor their communities' riparian habitat for natural resource agencies and professionals" described New Mexico's Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program (BEMP). Katie and Anna compiled several years worth of field work to present "North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) live capture technique and the effectiveness of using the sedative medetomidine hydrochloride (Domitor) and the antagonist atipamezole hydrochloride (Antiseden) to facilitate handling."

BEMP is a joint project of the University of New Mexico’s Biology Department and Albuquerque’s Bosque School operated under the Black Institute for Environmental Studies at Bosque. This collaborative program involves over 3,000, K-12 and university student volunteers from over 30 New Mexico public, private, pueblo, and home schools in long-term ecological research to monitor key indicators of structural and functional change in the Middle Rio Grande riparian forest, or “bosque.” The data derived is shared with local, state, tribal, and federal government agencies in analyzing and managing the bosque. BEMP is the official K-12 outreach program of UNM’s Sevilleta Long Term Ecological Research Network, which is a branch of the National Science Foundation’s Long Term Ecological Research Network, managed by the Biology Department.


Bosque Soccer Player Signs with the University of Tampa
Bosque School senior, Caroline, signed an official letter of intent to play collegiate soccer for the University of Tampa in Florida today. The Tampa Spartans women’s soccer team is the reigning national champions in Division II. Caroline is a 5’10” forward for the Bosque Bobcat women’s soccer team and played 8 years with the competitive club team New Mexico Rush Cheetah’s. Caroline is a two time all-district soccer player and a two time all-state soccer player in Division A/AAA. She has also garnered several accolades in track including 2004 District Champion in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash and a 2nd place finish in state in the 200 meter dash.

 


Bosque School 7th Graders Send Over 100 Care Packages to Servicemen and Woman Oversees
The 7th grade class at Bosque School collected snacks, toiletries, books, and socks to send to over 100 servicemen and women deployed oversees through the Rio Rancho Chapter of the Blue Star Mothers organization. Blue Star Mothers is a national organization with five chapters throughout New Mexico.

Bosque School’s care packages will help over 100 deployed service members enjoy Valentine’s Day this year with items including toiletries, snacks, books, and puzzles. Each box is packaged with a personal letter from one of the Bosque School students.

Bosque School Students Sweep the West Mesa Cluster Spelling Bee
Three Bosque School 8th graders took the top three honors at the West Mesa Spelling Bee on January 16, 2008. These three students will represent the West Mesa High School cluster at the regional spelling bee in March. The winning students from Bosque School include; Annie -first place, Kili -second place, and Jared-third place after a competitive 40 rounds of spelling!

Bosque Students Donate to Ronald McDonald House
The Bosque School student government delivered over 150 gifts and toiletries to the Albuquerque Ronald McDonald house on December 24. The student government placed the suggested items on snowflakes allowing students to take them and collect or purchase the items in need. These items were delivered to families currently staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Albuquerque. Krystal, class of 2011, said the original plan was to collect 50 items, but that estimate was tripled.

Bosque School Students Attend Diversity Leadership Conference
Four Bosque School students participated in the 14th Annual Student Diversity Leadership Conference in Boston, MA, November 29-December 1, 2007. This year’s conference, “Learning from the Past, Leading for the Future: Reshaping Traditions,” was sponsored by The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). The four Bosque School students participating included members of the junior class, Jaime, Brynne, Katherine, and Caitlin. The two faculty members participating were Juaquin Moya, Bosque’s director of college guidance, and Clara Roybal, math faculty. Along with Bosque School, students from Albuquerque Academy and Santa Fe Prep also attended the conference.

There were 3,500 faculty and students from other independent schools from across the United States attending the event. Student leaders from across the country worked on topics of equity and justice. This included, but was not limited to, exploring civil rights legacy, taking a personal journey through identity, and using dialogue and the arts as a means of expression. The students were pushed to reflect personally, act locally, and think globally. Each student attended workshops and heard from great speakers, such as: Frank Wu, Dean of Wayne State University Law School, Kip Fulbeck, award-winning filmmaker, and Maria Hinojosa, award-winning journalist and author.


Bosque School Students Win the New Mexico Bug House Chess Championship
Bosque School students and siblings, Gabe and Isaac, won the New Mexico Bug House Chess Championship Open Division (ages can range from 7-adult) at the Chess Fest tournament. This tournament, organized by Chess Fest, was held on Saturday, November 17 at Sandia Preparatory School. There were 60 contestants and the open division consists of players with the highest ratings in the state. The sibling team went 6-0 the first day and beat the 2006 championship team in the final round on day two.


The Class of 2013 Show off their Ceramic Bowls for Full Hearts filling Empty Bowls
Every Bosque 7th grader created an original clay bowl in art class and over 85 bowls were donated to Project Share for their annual fundraiser to benefit hunger relief in the Albuquerque metro area. The annual fundraiser brings in hundreds of supporters who purchase the bowls filled with soup donated by area restaurants and the supporter takes home the artistic bowl while helping to relieve hunger in our community.


Bosque School Students Form a Medical Reserve Corps Unit

A group of five Bosque students are now licensed Basic Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) after finishing an160 hour course at CNM. These students subsequently orchestrated the organization of a Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) unit. The MRC is a volunteer organization which responds to natural disasters and emergencies within the United States. With their recent EMT licensure, these students will assist sporting events on and off campus and respond to emergency situations within the community and nation wide. The group’s first assignments were with the NM Special Olympics in May and a skate park event this summer. Several of the members volunteer their time as ski patrol at the Sandia Ski Area in the winter months.

 

The group of licensed EMT’s from Bosque School includes Asad, Tommy, Quinn, Chris, and Ivan. Several other students including Dupuy, Gordon, Max, and Sam are participating in either a First Responder course at Bosque School or an Outdoor Emergency Care class, a course run through the national ski patrol, which is equivalent to EMT duties without state licensure.

 


Students Support Operation Smile
A group of 25 Bosque School students spent a year organizing and fundraising to advocate for the non-profit organization, Operation Smile. “Throughout the world, Operation Smile volunteers to repair childhood facial deformities while building public and private partnerships that advocate for sustainable healthcare systems for children and families. Together, we create smiles, change lives, heal humanity,” according to the mission quote from the Operation Smile website. Since 1982, Operation Smile's volunteers have provided free reconstructive surgery to more than 100,000 children and young adults and thousands of healthcare professionals have been trained globally.

The officers of the Bosque School chapter of Operation Smile are Kinsey, Sommer, Kelley, and Mary Sarah. The group is advised by faculty member, David Bair. In the first year, the group raised over $2,000 to support seven different children around the world, who will receive corrective surgery. Durham, Lang, and Merrick attended the Operation Smile International Student Leadership Conference in Limerick, Ireland over in August. Additionally, a select few members internationally are selected to participate each year with a Medical Mission, which is a team of 30 medical professionals who donate their skills and time to help the children. Kinsey and Bosque School faculty member, David Bair were selected to participate in a 10-day medical mission in Calcutta, India in November 2007. November will mark the 25th anniversary of the founding of the organization and they will celebrate the event by sending 25 different missions in 25 different locations throughout the world.
